American Legion Post 20 Commander Thomas E. “Tommy” Mallory Jr. of Bland died Friday, July 6, 2012.

The 75-year-old Mallory was honored in April with a proclamation from the Bland County Board of Supervisors for outstanding service and dedication. As an employee of the Bland County Sheriff’s Office for 22 years, he served as chief jailor and county communications officer.

Mallory was a member of the Bland Fire Department for 51 years. He served as chief for 22 years.

For many years, Mallory was operator of the water plant and conservator of the peace.

His service to various civic organizations included membership and office holder in the Bland and Mechanicsburg Ruritan Clubs, Sons of Confederate Veterans, American Legion Post 20, Triangle Sportsman Club, the Virginia Sheriff’s Association, Amateur Radio Club and the Civil Air Patrol.

Mallory was a life member of the National Rifle Association, Single Action Shooters Society, and Law Enforcement Alliance of America. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

In July, Mallory was presented with a certificate from the American Legion Post 20  of Bland county honoring his years of outstanding service as Post Commander.

Thomas E. "Tommy" Mallory Jr..Thomas "Tommy" E. Mallory Jr. Thomas "Tommy" E. Mallory Jr., age 75, of Bland, VA., passed away Friday, July 6, 2012. He was born, May 20, 1937, in Bluefield, W.Va., son of the late Thomas Ezra Mallory Sr., and Mamie Dunn Mallory. Thomas is preceded in death by an infant son, James Mallory.

 He was a member of the Bland Fire Department, American Legion Post #20, Mechanicsburg Ruritan Club, Sons of Confederate Veterans, The Triangle Sportsman's Club, Single Action Shooters Society, an NRA life member, and the Bland County Historical Society.

Thomas is also a Veteran of the U.S. Navy, and also served as Chief Jailor, and is a retired Captain of the Bland County Sheriff's Office.

He is survived by his wife, Leona Thompson Mallory of Bland, Va.; son, Michael Mallory of Pulaski, Va.; daughters, Becky Mallory of Ashburn, Va., Jeannie and Mitch Beatley of Bland; special son, Lorin Hanshew of Ceres, Va.; grandchildren, Tessa Mallory and M.J. Mallory.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at 11 a.m., at the Bland Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Jim Conley officiating. Interment will follow in the Bland Cemetery, where Military Graveside Rites will be rendered by the American Legion Post #20. The family will receive friends Monday, July 9, 2012, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
